Introduction

This extensive set of cases was written by graduate and post-doc students who took part in workshops on Graduate Research Ethics Education, held at Indiana University, Bloomington, from 1996 to 2002. Each case is accompanied by expert commentaries

The workshops at IU brought together students in the natural sciences for a study of research ethics and the cases reflect the experiences and problems these students faced. The project was sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF Grant No. SBR 9421897) to the Association for Practical and Professional Ethics (APPE); The Office of Research, University Graduate School; and Poynter Center for the Study of Ethics and American Institutions, all at Indiana University.

Contents

The cases are organized in volumes by year, and by general subject matter within each year's volume.

Volume 1, 1997

Addresses issues of faculty responsibility to students; collaboration, authorship, and intellectual property; and human subjects.

Volume 2, 1998

Addresses issues of responsibility of faculty in regards to mentoring graduate students, publication. credit and collaboration on research papers, what is intellectual property and who has the right to it.

Volume 3, 1999

Addresses issues of publication, management of the lab, the responsibilties of managers/supervisors to students and post docs, integrity in research including human subjects

Volume 4, 2000

Addresses issues of research with human and animal subjects, mentor/faculty responsibilites; collaborative research, authorship; professional responsibilities in consulting and the roles of public scientists.

Volume 5, 2001

Addresses issues of research with human and animal subjects, authorship, lab relationships, and social responsibilities of the scientist.

Volume 6, 2002

Addresses issues of faculty responsibilties, collegial and research relations/collaboration, managing grants, confidentiality and animal research.
